Morality Under Stress

Akuapem Poloo

A morality issue has never taken such a turn in the life of the country in recent times.

Enter Akuapem Poloo and her nude preference on social media recently, and the fallout has been electric.

There are multiple means of attaining celebrity or notoriety status in society. Unfortunately, however, some go for notoriety thinking erroneously that they are on the path of celebrity or fame. Such persons become a nuisance to society although they are able to through social media spew their unwanted conduct unceasingly.

Whereas some performances are value-friendly others are not. They are simply outrageous and therefore unacceptable even in the most liberal of societies.

That is why public opinion has been generally opposed to conducts not in tandem with our age-old values. Akuapem Poloo as she cools off in the confines of a prison, has evoked an unenviable debate in street corners. She is not alone who thinks that there is nothing outrageous about what she did. That is the source of the raging debate.

To dance semi-nude or sing one’s way to fame among other acts are the commonly known means of attracting attention.

When the search for fame however, takes the form of stripping naked in front of a kid, matters can be said to have reached an unacceptable notch on the value chart.

We have heard a lot about a few yet loud and harsh dissenting views. Theirs is in opposition to what majority of Ghanaians hold against the conduct of the lady whose child we join others in sympathizing with at this stage. An innocent child suffering from the iniquities of a fame-seeking naked woman on social media needs our prayers and sympathy.

We stand in favour of the protection of our values and sneer at those who do otherwise.

It is for good reasons that human beings clothe themselves and reserve certain conducts for the eccentric or even mentally depraved.

What has befallen Akuapem Poloo should serve as an important lesson for those who seek fame yet confuse it with notoriety or even infamy. Fame is more dignifying and comes naturally and effortlessly.

The harsh language which has been rife in the aftermath of the court’s decision on Akuapem Poloo is hurtful.

That we have within us persons who see nothing untoward with a mother stripping naked in front of a kid and capturing and sharing the image for world view on social media makes us worry about the future of society.

If it was in Europe or America, we can bet that the state would easily take the kid away from the mother. You can berate the whites for always trying to impose on us their culture that we find unacceptable as Africans but when it comes to total child care and protection, nobody comes closer.

A society which does not have values let alone protecting same is not worth living in. Fortunately, we have and are ready to protect these for posterity.

Those who have been complaining that the country’s laws are not working are the same people who are angry that Akuapem Poloo has been jailed for breaching the laws.

Our values have never been so threatened.
