Salma Mumin
Actress Salma Mumin was over the weekend caught in a web of lies over an allegation that an MTN Ghana staff stole her GH¢10,000 from her business mobile money (MoMo) account.
She took to Instagram earlier last week to write, “MTN keep saying nobody can withdraw your mono account without your concern but I just found out my over 10,000 cedis from my business mono account has been taken…MTN is not safe anymore (sic).”
“@mtnghana I believe it’s your workers…Must be looked into. My money must be found,” she added.
The post caused a lot of outrage about how safe the MTN MoMo service is, forcing the company to respond in a statement on Friday.
According to the statement, the actress’ claims were total lies because she didn’t have the said amount in her account.
It, therefore, demanded that she apologised or the company presses legal charge against her for unnecessarily dragging the company’s name into disrepute.
“We wish to state categorically and for the record that the claims made in the post are false and misleading to the public and poster’s Instagram followers.
As @Salmamumin is very much aware, the said amount was not in her MoMo merchant wallet and no money has been taken from her MoMo merchant wallet as claimed,” MTN debunked in a statement.
“She has been engaged on this leading to the apparent deletion of the said post. By this rejoinder, we demand that @salmamumin immediately apologise to MTN Ghana with 24 hours of this publication,” the statement added.
Surprisingly, Salma ate humble pie and publicly apologised.
“I was clearly mistaken. I hereby retract the said post and apologise unreservedly to MTN Ghana for any inconvenience caused by my earlier post,” she pleaded.
“I also express my sincere gratitude to MTN Ghana for its effective and prompt support in resolving the difficulty I was facing with my transaction,” she concluded.
A number of showbiz observers have since Friday been criticising her as a result of her action. On Saturday, she trended on Twitter after publishing her apology on Instagram.
