A 20-seater Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre funded by MTN Ghana Foundation and the UNDP has been handed over to the people of Pwalugu in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.
MTN Ghana Foundation constructed the Pwalugu ICT Centre and other projects in fulfillment of its pledge to build at least one state-of-the-art ICT centre in all 10 regions of Ghana.
The project, initiated in 2013, was among a few that were earmarked to be completed before the year 2016.
The completion of the ICT Centre falls in line with MTN Ghana Foundation’s policy of improving access to internet in most urban and rural communities in the country.
The facility has 20 desktop computers, a laptop and projector for illustration, printer, photocopier and scanner.
MTN Ghana Foundation’s Executive Secretary, Robert Kuzoe, in his address, said ICT has become an integral part of the country’s development in all spheres and very important in information management and knowledge acquisition in a fast changing world.
According to him, integrating ICT into Ghana’s education system should be taken seriously so as to encourage children at the basic level to embrace ICT.
Mr. Kuzoe disclosed that the handing over of the ICT facility would enable students in the area to access online libraries which have thousands of educational resources to support their learning.
Teachers can also do the research and learn extensively to be able to expand the prospects of their students.
Since its establishment some eight years ago, the MTN Ghana Foundation, is said to have invested a total of GH¢22.5 million in various areas such health, education in some 135 communities across the country.
Vitus Azaam, Assembly member for the Pwalungu Electoral Area, urged beneficiary teachers and students to patronize the facility and properly maintain it.
MTN Ghana Foundation, in consultation with community leaders, has formed a supervisory committee to ensure that revenue accrued is used to maintain the facility.
Apart from the Pwualugu ICT Centre, the Upper East Region has benefited from other projects funded by the MTN Foundation, including six-unit classroom blocks for some basic schools.
It has also built an ICT Centre for St. Charles Basic School and instituted Teachers Improvement Awards.
