MTN Laments Increasing Fiber Optic Cable Cuts

The Chief Corporate Services Officer of MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng

Chief Corporate Services Officer of MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng, has expressed worry about the increasing fiber optic cable cuts which have greatly affected the services the company renders to its customers across the country.

About 1,605 fiber optic cable cuts were recorded in 2020 and 1,684 even before the end of 2021.

The most frequent fiber optic cable cut occurred in the Greater Accra Region, Ashanti Region,
Eastern Region, Western Region, and Oti Region (Eastern Corridor).

In 2019, it cost MTN Ghana Gh¢8,281,000.00 to repair all recorded fiber optic cables that were cut off across the country, and in 2020, MTN Ghana spent Gh¢9,537,838.00 to repair those that were cut off.

According to him, road construction and private developers are the main culprits in the fiber optic cut the company is currently facing.

He appealed to contractors and private developers to engage MTN Ghana before they start their work to enable them to relocate the fiber cables to prevent any cut.

“ If the fiber is cut what it means is that the network between towns, regions, and even the entire country comes to a halt until the problem is fixed.”

Mr. Koranteng made this known during this year’s Special Edition of MTN Editors Forum held in Tamale in the Northern region.

The MTN Editors Forum is a platform to interact with journalists to get feedback regarding their services and challenges to improve their services for the good people of Ghana.

Some journalists were rewarded in a raffle draw at the end of the event with Samsung smartphones, shopping vouchers, souvenirs among others.

The Chief Corporate Services Officer appealed to journalists to support MTN to educate Ghanaians about Mobile money fraud to ensure that the menace is curtailed.
