The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Constituency in the Eastern Region, Michael Okyere Baafi, has called for a united front to develop Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital, to the level it deserves in his first term in office.
Mr. Baafi, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, in his campaign, promised massive development when given the mandate.
Having been voted into office as the MP, he has launched a project aimed at developing the regional capital dubbed, “This is the era for development.”
Addressing a stakeholders’ forum with the political parties in the region, he said, “We want to develop Koforidua and we want to try every means to make it happen. To be able to achieve this target, we will need the support of everyone. We will need support from the major opposition party – National Democratic Congress (NDC), NDP, PPP and CPP among others.”
According to him, the development is in four folds, adding that there is a conscious effort to assist senior high senior graduates further their education.
“I am going to invest a lot in education, so that there will be enough literates in the town. Education has been very cheap, so in the next two years we want to train 50 engineers and doctors in Koforidua with a conscious effort,” he said.
He indicated that he had been able to secure scholarship from the India High Commission for medicine and engineering at the tertiary level.
He has also promised to fix the poor road network in the first quarter, revealing that he has petitioned the government to help fix three major roads in Koforidua and its environs.
The former CEO of the Ghana Free Zones said he had also set a fund to assist traders in Koforidua.
He said a committee had been put in place for the disbursement of the fund to traders who merit assistance which would start on March 1, 2021.
“I am doing all these for you to understand the work you are doing. We are going forward and we are not leaving any stone unturned,” he added.
He, however, use the opportunity to donate two motorbikes to the NDC and the PPP representatives who attended the forum.
