The Ashanti Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has ordered hawkers at Abuakwa, near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, to stop operating in the busy streets of the area.
Kwabena Nsenkyire, the Ashanti Regional NADMO Coordinator, said it was dangerous to sell in the streets.
“Hawking exposes the traders to danger, as they can be accidentally hit by oncoming vehicles.
The NADMO chief said his outfit would not sit aloof for a major accident to occur in the region.
He observed that the hawkers also cause vehicular traffic at Abuakwa.
“Apart from being exposed to danger, the hawkers in the streets also cause vehicular traffic,” he added.
Mr. Nsenkyire charged the Atwima Nwabiagya District Assembly to quickly move the hawkers from the streets.
“We, at NADMO, would not wait for hawkers to be injured or killed by vehicles before we react.
“And that is why I am asking the district assembly to move the hawkers from the streets to help prevent a looming disaster.”
