National Security Impounds 3 Cargo Trucks Over Diversion

NATIONAL SECURITY operatives have impounded three articulated trucks loaded with uncustomed goods on diversion from the Tema Port.

The trucks were loaded with cargo containing car batteries, bags of sugar and cartons of tomato paste which were on transit to a neighbouring country.

However, the truck exited the Customs warehouse at the Tema Port without documentation or any tracking device to help monitor the goods from the point of exit to the final destination.

Lieutenant Christian Kofi Tettey, the National Security Coordinator for Tema Port, explained that the importer and agent during interrogation admitted removing the tracking devices prior to departure.

He wondered how Customs officials failed to ensure that the tracking devices and necessary documentation were procured before the cargo was released.

Lt. Tettey reiterated that such actions of Customs which are causing much loss of revenue to the state because of diversion of cargo trucks.

The National Security Coordinator highlighted several instances encountered where the electronic tracking devices which are to aid the monitoring of trucks in transit were either not fixed or were tampered with.

He warned that his outfit would not spare anyone caught in connection with such criminal acts.
