A section of the stadium under construction
The contractor working on the Youth Resource Centre/Sports Stadium in Navrongo in the Upper East Region, Amecben Construction Limited, is hopeful of completing the first phase of the project by the September 2019 deadline.
The Navrongo project is among the 10 stadia that were awarded on contract by the Ministry of Youth & Sports late 2018 to be built across the country.
The Upper East Region has never had a standard stadium with a grass field, and so this will be the first to be built anywhere in the region and for many club owners, sports administrators and sports entrepreneurs, it is a blessing that should not be delayed in coming into fruition.
A tour of the facility by the DAILY GUIDE SPORTS over the weekend revealed that over 85 per cent of works on the VIP and three other stands, offices and washrooms and other auxiliary facilities have been done.
In January 2019, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah visited the project site and assured the people of the region that he would personally ensure that the contractor executes a standard job on time.
Project Coordinator of Amecben, Salifu Bukari, told DAILY GUIDE SPORTS that the company intends to deliver a FIFA standard stadium that will last for decades.
According to him, the first phase comprises the finishing of the VIP stands and three other stands, athletics tracks and a green grass field.
The second phase will see the fixing of chairs and other fittings in all departments of the stadium, while the third phase is the initiative of Mr. Asiamah and Mr. Kofi Adda.
“In the history of Premier League, Upper East has had only one club qualifying despite the number good clubs and talented players. Some great Division One clubs had to fold up and many sports investors have had to end their investment in players and clubs,” a coach, Salifu Fatawu, stated.
