A National Democratic Congress (NDC) agent was arrested for allegedly stealing a mobile phone belonging to an Electoral Commission (EC) official at a registration centre in the Central Region on Thursday.
Prince Tenge reportedly stole the phone at the Akotoakoto Police Station, one of the locations for the ongoing voter registration exercise in the Awutu-Senya West Constituency.
The Tecno phone belonged to an EC official manning the face recognition gadget at the location.
Upon discovering that his phone which was on charge had ‘vanished’, the EC official raised the alarm prompting an immediate search of all persons at the venue.
The phone was found on Prince Tenge, and he was immediately arrested and handed over to the police.
The agent, known as a former community policeman, is said to be one of the assistants of the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
His arrest prompted a recall of his previous arrest for allegedly stealing a sewing machine and wearing the uniform of an Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) officer and extorting money from drivers.
The Awutu-Senya West Constituency Branch of the NDC has, however, denied that the suspect was an official agent of the party at the centre.
The Communications Officer of the party in the Awutu-Senya West told a radio station in Accra yesterday that Prince Tenge is only a sympathizer of the NDC, and he does not even bear a party card.
“He went there on his own volition as a sympathizer of our party. He’s not an accredited agent to be monitoring the registration process on behalf of the party,” Kweku Ampong pointed out.
In another vein, the party has asked that the case be investigated and dealt with according to law.
