The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has once again unleashed scathing criticism on the Electoral Commission (EC) for withholding the final voter’s register, fueling suspicions of manipulation and lack of transparency.
“The EC has not released the final voter’s register to the political party, but it claims it has resolved all our (NDC) concerns without knowing them,” Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, lamented.
He added, “But they can’t start printing the register without giving us a copy. I feel they are afraid to release the register to us because they don’t know what more discrepancies we will expose.”
Dr. Omane Boamah’s statements underscore the NDC’s frustration and skepticism about the EC’s intentions.
The party’s concerns are rooted in Ghana’s history of electoral controversies and the EC’s previous discrepancies in voter registration.
“A credible voter’s register is crucial for the integrity of the elections,” Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized. “Political parties, including the NDC, have a legal right to access the voter’s register well ahead of elections.”
“The EC’s reluctance to release the register raises questions about their commitment to free and fair elections… We will not sit idle while the EC potentially undermines the legitimacy of our democratic process” Omane Boamah stated when addressing a stakeholders forum on Monday.
