One More Mahama ‘Killer’ Grabbed

The police have arraigned another person for his alleged involvement in the death of Major Maxwell Mahama at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region.

Bismarck Abanga was arrested on September 14 this year after he had returned to Denkyira-Obuasi.

He was handed over to the police on September 17.

He had allegedly fled the town after the incident, and returned, apparently thinking that the case was over.

Bismarck Abanga, who was arrested in his family house, has been charged with two counts and remanded into police custody when he appeared at an Accra District Court on Tuesday, September 19.

This brings to 22 – including a woman – the number of persons charged over the gruesome murder of the military officer on May 29, 2017.

They have been provisionally charged with conspiracy to murder and murder.

The prosecutor, DSP George Amegah, urged the court to remand Abanga.

Magistrate Joshua Caleb Abaidoo accordingly remanded Bismarck Abanga into lawful custody to reappear with the other accused persons on September 25.

Another person, Emmanuel Boadu, a brick layer, was arrested at Elubo in the Western Region on September 12, this year and had been arraigned before the court.

Major Mahama was the commander of a military detachment stationed at Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District of the region to check the activities of illegal miners popularly known as galamseyers.

He was lynched by a mob who mistook him for an armed robber. The mob ignored his persistent plea that he was an officer of the Ghana Army.
