Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted that the ‘One Village, One Dam’ policy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is due to kick-start this year with some 570 dams to be constructed in the three regions of the north.
Dr Bawumia made this disclosure at the annual Paarigbielle Festival of the chiefs and people of the Tumu Traditional Area in the Upper West Region.
According to the vice president, the government will provide other interventions in the agricultural sector, which is expected to have a great impact on Ghana’s food security and improve lives in farming communities.
He further indicated that the Sissala area, which is made up of the Sissala East and West Districts, would get 10 dams each.
It is expected that in the coming weeks, a sod cutting ceremony will be held for the commencement of work.
Making reference to the Free SHS policy, the implementation of other policies and the reduction of utility tariffs, the vice president said the construction of the dams would be another indication of President Akufo-Addo’s government’s commitment to fulfilling the promises it made to Ghanaians ahead of the 2016 elections to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.
Dr Bawumia said government is committed to ensuring value addition in the agricultural sector, and is engaged in discussions with potential investors to add value to crops such as cotton and maize.
Meanwhile, the vice president has also hinted that the Tumu cotton gin would be revamped by the government under the ‘One District, One Factory’ programme to provide employment and also boost the textile industry.
