Opoku Ware School (OWASS) in Kumasi on Friday won the maiden edition of the World Egg Day inter-schools quiz competition held in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.
The school emerged as the winner with a total of 70 points to beat competition from T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School which garnered 52 points in a three-round contest.
The quiz was organised by the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers (GNAPF) as part of its activities to mark this year’s World Egg Day celebration.
It was intended to promote the consumption of eggs on a daily basis and also make the students potential ambassadors of egg consumption.
The National President of GNAPF, Victor Oppong Adjei, said eggs contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats and are a great source of important nutrients, such as vitamin B6, B12 and vitamin D for the brain and body.
According to him, getting enough protein in one’s diets is an important way of helping his body’s health since each egg contains some grams of protein with helpful amino acids for both children and adults.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of GNAPF, Boris Baidoo, encouraged young people to go into poultry, describing the industry as lucrative.
He said the ability to provide for oneself and his family is vital to a person’s self-worth and well-being, and that poultry offers that opportunity to provide the employment, which is not always easy to come by, especially in developing economies.
The association used the occasion to donate 1,500 eggs to the inmates at the Kumasi Children’s Home and patients at the Children’s Hospital for them to also benefit from the nutritional value of eggs.
