Ghana’s Parliament has been recalled from recess for an emergency sitting today, September 3, 2024.
The decision, communicated by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on August 7, follows a petition from Majority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who expressed disappointment over the abrupt adjournment of the last parliamentary session on July 30.
The petition highlighted the need to address urgent government business left unresolved, prompting the Speaker to reconvene the House.
This emergency sitting marks a significant development in Ghana’s parliamentary history, underscoring the importance of prompt legislative action.
The agenda for today’s sitting is packed, with critical issues awaiting attention.
These include the debate and approval of the Financing Agreement between Ghana and the International Development Association, tax exemptions for beneficiaries under the One District, One Factory Programme, and matters concerning the Ghana Financial Stability Fund. Several pending bills will also be considered.
Notably, the emergency sitting will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre’s Dome, as the main chamber of Parliament undergoes retrofitting.
The temporary relocation underscores the urgency of the matters at hand, with lawmakers determined to tackle pressing national issues.
This development comes on the heels of a tumultuous parliamentary session, marked by heated debates and contentious issues.
