In a surprise move, the Congress Committee Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Alhassan Azong, has issued a statement clarifying the actions of the party’s disciplinary committee.

The statement, released on September 5, 2024, comes on the heels of a recent statement by the disciplinary committee, which had sparked confusion and controversy within the party.

According to Azong, the disciplinary committee is a duly constituted body, but it has not been mandated by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to sit on any specific issue or investigate any matter.

Therefore, any actions or decisions taken by the disciplinary committee without the explicit mandate of the NEC are unauthorized and ultra vires.

This development has raised questions about the role and authority of the disciplinary committee within the party.

In recent times, the committee has been accused of overstepping its bounds and making decisions that are not in line with the party’s constitution.

The statement by Azong has also put to rest rumors that some candidates, including Bernard Mornah, had been disqualified from contesting the 2024 PNC presidential election.

According to Azong, no candidate has been disqualified, and the electoral process will proceed as scheduled.

This is not the first time that the PNC has been embroiled in controversy.

In 2016, the party was rocked by a leadership crisis, which led to the suspension of its then-chairman, Bernard Mornah.

The crisis was eventually resolved, but it highlighted the deep-seated divisions within the party.

The PNC has also been criticized for its handling of internal conflicts.

In 2020, the party’s disciplinary committee was accused of bias and unfairness in its handling of a case involving a former party executive.

In his statement, Azong urged all party members to remain calm and focused on the upcoming elections.

He reiterated that the NEC has not received any report or recommendations from the disciplinary committee, and any claims or statements made by the committee are without merit and unconstitutional.

The development has sparked a heated debate within the party, with some members calling for greater transparency and accountability.

Others have expressed concern about the potential impact of the controversy on the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
