A retired journalist, Kwadwo Agyenim-Boateng, 73, from Berekum, has been elected to represent the Brong Ahafo Region on the Council of State. He polled 21 votes out of 50 valid votes cast to emerge winner.
In all, 10 persons, mostly chiefs, contested for the position in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Fifty assembly members, comprising two each from 25 Municipal and District Assemblies in the region, with the exception of Nkoranza North and South Assemblies, formed the Electoral College.
Nkoranza North and South District Assemblies did not provide any assembly members to vote in the election because they have not been constituted.
Eleven persons filed their nominations with the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest in the election in the region, but the Omanhene of the Yeji Traditional Area, who doubles as the president of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Pimampim Yaw Kagbresse, withdrew from the race at last-minute due to personal reasons.
Mr. Kwadwo Agyenim-Boateng beat nine others- Agyapong Adu-Baah, 62, a businessman, Nana Afena Nketia II, 54, businessman, Nana Osei Yaw Barimah, 71, a biochemist, Danso Kwadwo, 36, farmer, James Kofi Kyeremeh, 61, tax administrator and Nana Ansah Adu Baah II, 65.
The rest are Kwadwo Yeboah, 64, businessman, Osahene Kwaku Aterkyi II, 78, chartered surveyor and Kwasi Kyeremeh, 71, farmer.
Nana Yaw Osei Barimah followed closely with 11 votes while most of contestants got zero.
Speaking to the press after he was declared the winner, Mr. Agyenim-Boateng promised to advise the President on challenges bedeviling the people of Brong Ahafo Region, such as high youth unemployment in the region.
He also pledged to champion issues concerning journalists, especially their conditions of service.
He lauded the one-district one-factory policy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, adding that he would advise the President to focus on adding value to maize, plantain, yam and others, which are common in the Brong Ahafo Region.
