George Osei Mensah
A Madina District Magistrate Court, presided over by Richard Anku, has ordered the prosecution in the case of the murder of an Old Vandal to speed up its investigations.
The 23-year-old footballer, George Osei Mensah, who has been provisionally charged with murder, was remanded into custody by the court last month.
The accused, who appeared in court yesterday, had shaved off his braided hair.
His plea has been reserved for the police to conclude their investigations.
At yesterday’s sitting, the prosecution, led by Inspector Joyce Ninson, told the court that the police had almost completed their investigations and that they were yet to forward a duplicate docket to the Attorney General’s Office.
She said the prosecution is still waiting for a full autopsy report from the pathologist, who performed the post-mortem on the deceased.
The defence team, led by Stephen Opoku, urged the prosecution to expedite its investigations so that the human rights of the accused would not be violated.
The prosecutor Inspector Joyce Ninson, said the accused committed the crime after a misunderstanding which resulted in a fight.
The deceased, Martin Tweneboah, aka Tipsy, 32, also an Old Vandal, was stabbed in the neck multiple times by George, near Father Barcus Statue at the Commonwealth Hall.
She said the two men were among other vandals who were returning from the funeral of a former colleague at Dodowa on Saturday, December 9, 2017.
On their way, a misunderstanding ensued between them and on reaching campus tempers flared.
In the process, the accused person grabbed a knife from a Khebab seller, near the Father Barcus Statue and attempted to stab the victim, but it was taken away from him by witnesses but he quickly grabbed a broken bottle and stabbed his colleague.
The accused person later helped other witnesses to convey the victim to the Legon Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The police were later informed by the hospital authorities which led to the arrest of the accused on Saturday evening.
