A male student is reported dead and another in critical condition when a riot broke out at the Sandema Senior High Technical School in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region.
The two met their fate after they were hit by warning shots from police personnel deployed to stem the melee.
The school has been closed down indefinitely after a meeting between the Regional and District Security Committee and the school authority yesterday.
The riots broke out when at about 9.40pm some students who were loitering after prep hours were forced to kneel down by some members of the school cadet corps whom the school authority had engaged to complement the security on campus and to maintain discipline.
When the punished students were later released, they informed their colleagues in the dormitories. They were infuriated by the incident, for which reason they confronted the cadets at their duty posts. The ensuing riot was extended to some teachers regarded as the sources of the power being exercised by the cadets.
Besides the life lost and injuries sustained by some, a motorbike, and a car belonging to teachers were destroyed, including louvre blades by the irate students.
When the police appeared at the scene, they fired warning shots to bring the situation under control after the students had pelted them with stones.
The deceased and his injured colleague are believed to have been hit by the warning shots of the police. A post mortem will be carried out on the corpse to establish this fact. Investigations into the case have already begun.
