Support Trainee Teachers… Chiefs, Districts Told

Traditional leaders in the country have been asked to actively support trainee teachers from the various Colleges of Education that are posted to their communities to teach.

A similar appeal has also been made to the district assemblies, opinion leaders, community leaders and the public at large so that trainee teachers could deliver properly.

Anaafo Yin, Project Coordinator, Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) at Wesley College of Education (WESCO) Kumasi, made the appeal at the grand launch of the Challenge Fund Project at WESCO in Kumasi, which was attended by the students, teachers, academia and some dignitaries.

Mr. Yin said student teachers face difficulties when they are posted to communities to work basically due to the lack of concern and support from the community, notably chiefs and the assembly.

The T-TEL is a government of Ghana programme with sponsorship from the United Kingdom’s Department of International Development (DFID) aimed at enhancing teaching programmes in colleges in the country.

Mr. Yin said through the T-TEL programme, WESCO had secured a grant of GH¢60,845, which would be used to support about 450 students of the school who go out to teach for communities for up to 18 months.

He stated that the T-TEL programme would boost collaboration between student teachers and the communities, enhance supervision and promote mentoring skills, among others.

Charlotte Rockson, Principal of WESCO, said “the programme aims to ensure that Ghana’s student teachers are equipped to deliver high quality teaching and learning in schools across the country.

She added that “the T-TEL programme is to transform the delivery of pre-service teacher education in Ghana by improving the quality of teaching and learning to support all 40 public colleges of education from 2014 to 2018.”
