Some of the workers on parade
A parade of workers belonging to the various unions of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) was on Wednesday held at the Takoradi Jubilee Park to mark this year’s May Day celebration in the Western Region.
Organizations, which participated in the parade, were the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and Social Security and National Insurance Trust.
The rest were Audit Service, Quality Control Company, Ghana Railway Company, Ghana Grid Company, among others.
Some deserving workers were presented with awards such as refrigerators and coloured television sets.
Addressing the parade, the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, noted that the government sees job creation as a panacea for unemployment.
He
indicated that government was committed to creating the necessary conditions to
make jobs available, especially to the teeming youth.
He also noted that government was equally concerned about low Edmund ration
among some public sector workers and stressed that it would address the
problem.
He called on all employers to make sure they paid the social security contributions of their workers regularly.
He appealed to the workers, particularly those in the informal sector, to cultivate the habit of saving for a secure future when they are on pension.
