Alhaji Adam Abu Takoro at one of the lorry stations
The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Adam Abu Takoro, has embarked on a tour of major lorry stations in the metropolis, appealing to transport operators to reduce fares in line with the recent drop in fuel prices nationwide.
According to him, a downward adjustment in transport fares would significantly ease the financial strain on residents, particularly workers, traders, and other commuters who depend on public transport for their daily livelihoods.
Beyond fare reductions, the MCE also used the opportunity to caution drivers, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to observe road safety regulations.
He urged them to avoid indiscriminate roadside parking and to exercise restraint on the roads in order to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.
The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Tamale acknowledged the concerns, stating that its national executives have received several appeals on the issue and are currently reviewing them for possible action.
Meanwhile, commuters in the metropolis continue to express frustration over what they describe as persistently high transport fares despite the fall in fuel prices, and are calling on government to intervene to ensure that drivers pass on the benefits to passengers.
