Residents of Tarkwa, a mining town in the Western Region have embarked on a massive demonstration over the poor state of their roads.
According to some of the residents the Tarkwa roads are in a very dilapidated state despite several promises from authorities and subsequent governments to fix them.
They blocked the road and burned tyres at Awhetieso on the Takoradi-Tarkwa main road and in front of the Anglogold Ashanti, Iduaprim Mines in the area.
Bauxite, Cocoa and Manganese hauling trucks which the residents believe are responsible for the fast deterioration of the highway, were not allowed to cross.
School children, workers and other road users were all denied passage.
Whilst some passengers alighted from their vehicles to support the demonstrators, others complained about the effect of their action on them.
Nana Abom Dua who claimed to be an Opinion leader at Awhetieso noted that it was unacceptable that minerals were mined from their community to feed the country’s income but they lack behind in development.
He pointed out that the Ahwetieso – Tarkwa road had been in bad shape for years and said he supported the action of the protestors.
He also asserted that heavy trucks for hauling minerals and cocoa that plied the road to the Takoradi harbour were largely blamed for the fast deterioration of the road.
