TMA To Turn Azonto Park Into Library

THE TEMA Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) is planning to convert the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park into a public library.

The park, which is located at the TDC Development Company Limited at Community One in Tema, was christened ‘Azonto Park’ by residents as a result of a hefty amount of GH¢400,000 sank into statues on the grassed field.

The white elephant project was done by Robert Kempes Ofosuware, a former Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of TMA, during the erstwhile Atta Mills-led government.

When Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the predecessor of Kempis assumed office, it was thought that the park named after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for his developmental vision for Tema could be re-designed to host weddings and a mini museum to generate revenue for the assembly but that did not materialise after spending so much on other projects there.

During a meet-the-press encounter last Friday, Felix Mensah Nii Annan-La, MCE of Tema, disclosed that a private investor had expressed interest in converting the park into a public library.

“You also mentioned the ‘Azonto Park’ and the way forward for the park. If you could see I have stopped all activities on the ‘Azonto Park’ because we want to redesign the area,” the MCE said in response to a question posed by DAILY GUIDE.

“I would like to take this opportunity to announce to you that we have gotten somebody who wants to, as part of his corporate social responsibility, do something for the people of Tema. What the person wants to do is to build a library and we want to bring that library to the Azonto Park,” he disclosed.

He was quick to add that the Metro Road Engineer was considering realigning the road network around the ‘Azonto Park’ to ease the regular vehicular traffic the area experiences except weekends.
