The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV
The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has rubbished the activities of the Volta separatist group, Homeland Study Group Foundation, which is calling for a secession of the Volta Region to create what it calls ‘State of Western Togoland.’
According to him, the activities of the group amount to nothing but a wishful thinking that cannot see the light of day.
He has therefore urged Ghanaians not to harbour any fear as the activities of a ‘handful’ of individuals cannot pose any security threat to the country.
Togbe Afede, who is also the President of the National House of Chiefs, said this when he addressed members of the Central Region House of Chiefs recently.
The group recently intensified its campaigning for the separation of the Volta Region and parts of the Northern and Upper East Regions which it claims existed before Ghana’s independence.
Three leaders of the group were arrested on March 6 and 7 and are currently facing treason charges at the Ho high court.
Togbe Afede believes that the arrests had rather given the group nationwide prominence, since their activities in the past went unnoticed.
“This handful of people have been pursuing this for so many years now, and I don’t think they pose any security threat to our country. I believe they were lucky to have been arrested and that appears to have given the platform and many Ghanaians got to know about them. Left to me, they should have been ignored as it was in the past,” he stated.
He also urged Ghanaians to ignore the activities of the separatist group as the people of the Volta Region are united and have no intention of seceding from Ghana.
