As part of efforts to promote beach tourism in Ghana, dancehall artiste Togbe Ghana has partnered Beach Token to embark on beach clean-up exercises at all beaches in the country.
The maiden edition of the beach clean-up exercises, which is being organised to reduce plastic waste along the beaches, will take place at the Cape Coast Legion Beach in the Central Region this Saturday, August 27.
Togbe Ghana, who is the leader and founder of Togbe Ghana Foundation, said the current state of beaches in the country is not encouraging even though there had been a rampant call on keeping beaches clean.
According to him, he and his team have decided to embark on nationwide beach cleaning exercise to promote tourism in the country, as well as educate people on the need to keep beaches and their areas free from waste and plastic material.
The clean-up exercise will also be used to create awareness about the negative human impact on the planet, in particular the harm caused by excessive and improper disposal of waste, and the impact of plastic on marine life.
Togbe Ghana mentioned that during the clean-up exercise, he will use the opportunity to speak to the people living in communities around the beaches on the need to keep the beaches, their various homes and surroundings clean.
He however, called on the people of Cape Coast to come out in their numbers to help create the awareness on how to keep our beaches clean in other to attract more tourists to our beaches.
‘A beach is a sensitive environment that supports numerous plants and animals. All of these benefits, of course, depend on our coasts being safe and healthy. That is why beach clean-up is essential because it improves the coastal and ocean ecosystem’ he added.
He has therefore called on NGOs to support the cleanup exercise to help reduce plastic waste along our beaches which have in recent times reduces tourism in the country due to the filthy nature of our beaches.
