Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) has called on African countries to adopt the multiple destination concept.
According to the Union, the adoption of a multiple destination concept will promote tourism in Africa and prevent the transfer of money from Africa to Europe and America.
Nancy O. Sam, President of TOUGHA, who was speaking to BUSINESS GUIDE at Akwaaba Travel Market held in Lagos, Nigeria recently, said the multiple destination concept will enable tourists to travel within Africa at less cost.
This, she said, will boost tourism in Africa and rake in more revenue for the continent, stating that “we are encouraging the multiple destination concept to ensure that Africans travel within Africa which will ensure that the continent’s money circulate in Africa.”
In view of that, TOUGHA signed a multiple destination agreement with South Africa to promote tourism between the two countries at the just-ended Akwaaba Travel Market in Lagos.
Mrs. Sam said the agreement will also allow tourists to tour major cities in Ghana and South Africa.
“We all know that Ghana is the gateway to Africa and if you are a serious tour operator, Ghana is a country you must look at.
South Africa has identified the potential- they know that the African-American market is to Ghana because most of them are coming back to their roots to see the forts and castles.
“The agreement will be renewed yearly. Other countries too are coming on board. Countries like Namibia, Zambia and Botswana. This will boost tourism in Africa and generate more revenue for the continent,” she said.
