Tragedy struck on the Kumasi-Accra highway as a heart-wrenching head-on collision between two vehicles unfolded, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
The catastrophic incident, which transpired on Friday night along the Breku stretch in the Ashanti Region, resulted in the loss of 21 lives, underscoring the grim toll of road accidents.
Eyewitnesses, still reeling from the horrific crash, narrated a grim sequence of events where a Sprinter bus and a mini-bus collided with devastating force. Reports suggest that one of the drivers, recklessly speeding and attempting an ill-fated overtaking maneuver, set the stage for the calamitous collision that claimed numerous lives and left others battling for survival.
In the immediate aftermath of the collision, the scene painted a somber picture of the magnitude of the tragedy. A total of 14 individuals, including both drivers, met a tragic end at the grisly crash site, while seven more lost their lives during the agonizing journey to Juaso and Konongo Government Hospitals.
As the dust settled and the magnitude of the loss became apparent, the injured, grappling with varying degrees of trauma, were swiftly transported to medical facilities for urgent treatment. The Konongo Government Hospital emerged as a focal point for managing the aftermath, with authorities coordinating the transfer of the deceased and offering vital medical care to the survivors fighting for their lives.
