Trump Sweeps US Elections

Donald Trump has been elected as the 47th President of the United States in an extraordinary comeback.

Trump defeated his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, in the elections securing 276 Electoral College votes as against the 223 secured by Kamala Harris.

The vote was called in favour of the former president and Republican candidate early on Wednesday, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

Victory in Wisconsin after earlier triumphs in Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania saw the former president clear the threshold of the 270 Electoral College votes required to clinch the White House in Tuesday’s election.

President-elect Donald Trump, four years ago refused to accept defeat, sparking a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.

His victory has been met by international congratulations but is likely to add further uncertainty to a turbulent geopolitical situation.

Harris has reached out to President-elect Donald Trump, aides tell CNN, but has yet to connect with him. It is her intention, aides say, to speak with him before her 4 p.m. address, yesterday.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs congratulated Donald Trump on his projected win in a statement released on Wednesday.

“We respect the American people’s choice and offer our congratulations to Mr. Trump for his election,” it said.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has yet to publicly comment on the election results.

A number of African leaders have also expressed their desire to strengthen their relationships with the United States after congratulating President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory Wednesday.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu extended his “heartfelt congratulations,” saying he “trusts that President Trump will bring the world closer to peace and prosperity.”

Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, also congratulated Trump, writing that “the world needs more leaders who speak for the people. Zimbabwe stands ready to work with you and the American people to build a better, more prosperous and more peaceful world.”

Former Liberian President, George Weah, called Trump’s election a “dawn of a new beginning for the American people and marks an opportunity for renewed hope.”

Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, said on social media that he also looks forward to “continuing the close and mutually beneficial partnership between our two nations across all domains of our cooperation.”

NPP

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of Ghana also congratulated its counterpart in the United States, the Republican Party; the President-Elect Donald Trump; and Vice President-Elect, J.D. Vance, for emerging victorious in the just ended 2024 US Elections.

“It is no secret that the NPP has a longstanding close relationship with the Republic Party and shares a lot of things in common with the Republicans including the great ELEPHANT symbol, political orientation and ideology, as we both belong to the global alliance of centre-right political parties, the International Democrat Union (IDU).

“To this extent, we are excited to learn that increasingly, centre-right philosophies are receiving overwhelming support across the globe. It is our fervent hope that just like the United States, Ghana’s “elephant party”, will also emerge victorious in the December polls, by the grace of God,” a statement signed by the Party’s General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said.
