Over the weekend, media personality and social entrepreneur Vanessa Gyan was named outstanding woman in radio at the 2019 Ghana Outstanding Women Awards (GOWA)
The daughter of the late Kiki Gyan (of famed group Osibisa) took home the award for her involvement in social change as she continues to use her platform for a greater cause.
Vanessa has launched two initiatives over the past couple of years under The Sincerely, Vee Foundation. The first is ‘The Post Pregnancy Boujie Express’, which is a maternal health awareness event educating mothers on the importance of pre and postnatal care, CPR, breastfeeding and motherhood as a whole while always assisting in the payment of discharge bills for financially strapped mothers alongside their newborns.
The second is ‘The Focus On Your Education Programme’, which allows deserving young ladies the opportunity to attend college free of charge. The first recipient of the programme, Adwoa Patience, graduated from St. Theresa’s College of Education at Hohoe in the Volta Region in August this year. As a graduate herself, Vanessa prides herself on supporting young women to enable them to have the opportunity to attain higher education.
“First of all, I want to thank God for his blessings. To my family, friends, Team Boujie, and my dear fans, I wouldn’t be here without your daily support and encouragement. To every single person who voted, thank you,” she told NEWS-ONE after winning the award.
This award is so special as it’s my first-ever award and it’s so meaningful because it recognises my efforts in raising maternal health awareness through ‘The Post Pregnancy Boujie Express’ and supporting young girls who may not have the financial means to attend college through ‘The Focus On Your Education Programme’, which are both under The Sincerely, Vee Foundation.
“To my son Aaron, you inspire me every day. As a returnee, I think it’s imperative for our good deeds to be highlighted and for our stories to be told to encourage those in the diaspora to come home and use their skills and knowledge to make an impact on their own way.”
