Vodafone Ghana, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications, over the weekend launched the National Coding Programme at the Accra Digital Centre.

This is to pave way for the youth aged between 14 and 18 to be trained as coders in all districts of the country.

Yolanda Cuba, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vodafone Ghana, who assisted Vincent Odotei Sowah, Deputy Minister of Communications, to launch the project, said “Coding is a must-have skill for all teenagers and the youth in the current world, as they strive to have dominion over the future generation. It’s an empowerment tool that makes it possible to create things that others can use in their daily lives. It has proven to change the way businesses operate – online platforms and Uber – readily comes to mind.”

She added that it would start a revolution that would elevate Ghana from its current normal technological status to a force to be reckoned with in the future.

“There’s so much coders can do to change the world and today, right here, we are developing the next generation of world changers inspired by Vodafone.”

Three years ago, Ms Cuba said that as part of her outfit’s outlook for the Vodafone Foundation, it hatched an idea of a Vodafone National Coding Programme.

“In a world of ubiquitous computing, where personal computers are now part of mainstream social life; coding has become an intrinsic part of the digital future and a critical skillset needed to succeed in this life. Coding is a big part of our strategy to ignite Ghana’s digital future, and it starts with the youth.”

The Deputy Communications Minister, in a remark, expressed delight at the launch of the project and said government was proud of Vodafone Ghana for the initiative.

“We will do everything possible to achieve government’s digitalisation agenda and help create a better future for Ghana.”

He said government was also improving its Community Information Centre concept in all districts to create access to ICT infrastructure, promote efficiency and effectiveness and help improve the country’s economy for all.
