Helena Appiah
Some youth in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region have claimed the performance of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Helena Appiah, since her appointment, has been abysmal.
They are even alleging that the MCE “was a major contributory factor to the NPP’s humiliating defeat” in the area in the last general election.
The youth claimed that the MCE’s “actions and inactions” created “disaffection” for the NPP and contributed to the President’s defeat in the constituency by over 4,000 votes, which they said was the worst ever in the area for an NPP presidential candidate since 2000.
“Helena Appiah never visited any of the communities to campaign for the President or the NPP parliamentary candidate during the 2020 electioneering campaign,” the youth claimed in a press release issued by them and signed by its chairman, Akwasi Oduro, on Tuesday.
They have therefore appealed to President Akufo-Addo not to entrust Madam Appiah with another four year mandate as the MCE.
According to the youth, the NPP has other people who can manage the municipality better to the benefit of all, saying, “We are humbly appealing to the appointing authority and those who are still lobbying for her re-nomination to do so with proper assessment of her performance and approval ratings from the ordinary people.”
They insisted that a decision to maintain the MCE would be the most unfortunate, adding, “We the youth of Amenfi East do not want Helena Appiah as our MCE again. We hope the leadership of the NPP in our area will give us a new MCE nominee. She has had no plan, purpose or direction for the job as MCE.”
The release asserted that even though she was a woman, the MCE had failed to champion the course of the women in the municipality, claiming that “market women, traders, NPP polling station women organizers and many other women groups have all expressed their dissatisfaction about the MCE’s performance and relationship with them.
“We need new brains with fresh ideas to move our municipality forward, particularly, now that the people have elected a young NDC activist as the MP for the area.”
The MCE has not personally commented on the matter but a source close to her office has described the allegation as bogus and unwarranted; and said she had not done anything wrong to deserve the treatment of the so-called youth.
