A 39-year old female farmer, Felicia Asiedu, was adjudged the overall best farmer at the 2024 farmer’s day celebration organized by the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) at Mpatado in the municipality.
For her prize, the woman from Whindo in the municipality received a tricycle which was sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, Dr Prince Hamid Armah.
She also received 10 cutlasses, five bags of NPK fertilizer, three wellington boots and a certificate among others.
The theme for the 40th celebration was, “Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security”.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for EKMA, Kojo Acquah, said the drastic change in weather patterns has brought to the fore, the need to tackle climate change with all the seriousness it deserves.
“We must ensure that all the advanced technologies available to us through the Department of Agriculture and the research institutions are earnestly adopted by farmers and other value chain actors to improve our productions, create jobs and increase incomes”, he noted.
He said the government, through the department of agriculture and the municipal assembly, has in the year under review undertaken several activities to mitigate the effects of climate change and improve food production.
He mentioned some of the technologies as the use of improved seeds, irrigation, and battery cage system of raising birds, aquaculture tanks and urban agriculture.
“These are practices that ensure sustainability and all-year round food production,” he said.
Meanwhile, the prize for the best youth farmer, a motorcycle, was donated by the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Effia, Lawyer Boamah Nyarko.
In the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, John Amoasi Essien, a resident of Kansaworodo was crowned the overall Metropolitan best farmer.
He received a certificate, a tricycle, a knapsack, three cutlasses, wellington boots and assorted items.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Abdul Mumin-Issah praised farmers for their commitment and support to ensuring food security in the municipality and the country as a whole.
