A latest shooting incident at Alavanyo in the Hohoe municipality of the Volta Region, has left one woman dead and another nursing gunshot injuries.
The incident, which occurred last Monday evening at Alavanyo-Deme, sent many residents into mourning while others wondered when the killings in the area would end.
According to residents who spoke to DAILY GUIDE, the deceased is a 41-year-old woman identified as Rejoice Atta Yao, while the other victim, an 81-year-old woman who sustained gunshot wounds, is receiving treatment at the Margret Marquart Catholic Hospital at Kpando.
They narrated that Rejoice Atta Yao was returning from the farm last Monday evening when she was shot by an unidentified assailant at the entrance of her house. He quickly ran into a nearby bush.
Raymond Chorkor, the assemblyman for the area who confirmed the incident, indicated that the joint police/military detachment stationed in the conflict area, had visited the crime scene. He added that another team from Kpando and the Volta Regional police headquarters had visited the scene to gather evidence for investigation.
Mr. Chorkor indicated that the incident followed a recent one in which an elder of Sasadu is alleged to have been abducted during the (Sasadu) festivities at Alavanyo. The said elder has since not been found.
Owing to frequent conflicts between the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya, late last year, the government indicated its intention to take over the area and use as a military training zone.
