Zoomlion Sweepers Accuse Authorities Of Using Their Salaries For Investment

Some of the women expressing their displeasure

Zoomlion workers (sweepers) in Sunyani yesterday demonstrated against their authorities for their eight-month salary arrears, accusing their regional bosses of using their salaries for investment.

The women, numbering about 60 led by Hajia Ramatu, said they had not received salaries for the past eight months and the situation had affected them economically.  One woman asserted, “We are paid only GH¢100 per month with GH¢10 bank charges leaving only GH¢90 as our net”.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, their supervisor, Alex Acheampong, confirmed it and said they were yet to be paid. He however blamed the delay on a new mode of payment which is the use of the E-ZWICH card to access their salaries. Since most of them don’t know how to input their particulars it has become difficult to access their monies. Meanwhile, the women said they believe their salaries are being used for short term investment for officials to get profit before they are released to them.

They complained that they do the sweeping without protective clothing. Besides, they are not provided with logistics such as brooms, gloves and nose masks. As a result, they are forced to buy their own tools, yet the company is delaying in paying them.
