Omanhene of Nsein Traditional area, Awulae Agyefi Kwame

The Omanhene of Nsein Traditional area in the Western Region has called on the Minister for Chieftaincy Affairs to sack the Registrar of the Western Regional House of Chiefs with immediate effect.

Awulae Agyefi Kwame wants the Registrar, Samuel Owusu Brempong, sacked because according to the chief, the Registrar is responsible for the chieftaincy disputes in the Wassa Fiase Traditional area in the region.

The Chief made the serious allegation when the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah interacted with the chiefs on Monday in Sekondi.

The Omanhene who was not happy asked that apart sacking him, the Registrar should be investigated for the role he played in the chieftaincy disputes in his traditional area.

He appealed to the Minister to form a committee to look into the allegation he has made.

He said he could not fathom why the Judicial Committee of the House could rule that a chief should be gazatted and the Registrar would write a letter indicating that, that person should not be gazatted.

The Omanhene suggested that a Registrar who has spent more than five years with any of the Regional Houses of Chiefs in the country, should be transferred.

Awulae Agyefi Kwame said he was also not happy with the Western Regional Minister (RM), Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah for allegedly “not doing much to ensure the house had a President.”

It would be recalled that a Sekondi High Court nullified an election that saw Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, being elected as President of the House of Chiefs in October 2020.

The house proceeded with the election when Awulae Amihere Kpanyili, a contender for the presidential slot was not present and he sent the case to court.

The court in its ruling ordered both the Western Regional House of Chiefs and the Electoral Commission to organise fresh elections and allow the plaintiff Awulae Amihere Kpanyili to contest the elections.

During the interaction with the Ministers, Awulae Agyefi Kwame said the Regional Minister should have intervened to ensure that the case was resolved amicably because the House cannot function currently.

“How can the region progress with the House of Chiefs because there are certain committees we as chiefs should representatives.”

10% Oil Revenue

He revisited the demand made by the chiefs in the region for the government to invest 10 per cent of the oil revenue in the region.

“Some media houses twisted the issue and said we were demanding the 10 per cent of the oil revenue to buy clothes for ourselves but we needed the money for development projects,he said.

He then told the Minister for Energy that the chiefs will send a delegation to his office to further discuss the issue.

The Western Regional Minister in his reaction to the Awulae’s accusations respectfully told the chiefs that he was making behind-the-scenes to solve the impasse in the House.
