The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman, Ibrahim Baidoo has stated that the Australian Embassy in Ghana has agreed to partner government to set up Welfare Fund for the aged in the country.

According to him, the country does not have no Welfare Fund for the aged who are on retirement.

He said that some of the aged proposed to the Assembly last year to set up a Welfare Fund for them which was forwarded to government.

According to him, setting up a Welfare Fund for the aged will help those who do not have families but need financial assistance.

He said it would help cater for the underprivileged in society, adding that government was doing everything possible to make the creation of Welfare Fund a reality.

He made the statements during a ceremony to celebrate senior citizens in Ashaiman at the premises of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA).

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Baidoo said the purpose of the event was to award the aged who have worked diligently to contribute to the development of the Ashaiman Municipality. 120 people were awarded during the ceremony.

Touching on the rich culture of the country, the MCE pleaded with the aged to educate the youth on culture and norms in society.

According to him, the youth were wrongly intimating people of foreign culture which affects their morality and for that matter national development.

Mr. Baidoo further advised the youth to emulate the shining example of the aged by working very hard in order to effectively develop the municipality, stating that their efforts will be recognized accordingly.
