Traders at Kasoa New Market have demonstrated against the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly (ASEMA) for locking up their stores without prior notice.
They said the assembly had never had any prior engagements with them about the shops, so they were at a loss as to why the assembly would take such action.
Traders’ Account
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE on behalf of the traders, Esther Ardey, a shop owner, indicated that they acquired the stores from one Salami, who reportedly built it for rent. She said the assembly has no stake in the affairs of the market with the exception of tax collection and other charges.
Faustina Ofori Boateng, another trader affected by the lockup, lamented that some of the traders secured bank loans to purchase items for sale, and that the action was preventing them from selling their goods.
She said further that they were also invited by the Kasoa Divisional Police Command as regards charges levelled against them by an unknown complainant. He claimed the police refused to mention their charges to them.
Efforts to reach Michael Mensah who is the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the area for a response proved futile, as he did not return calls and messages sent to him. The assembly is yet to respond to the matter.
