The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has directed all Electronic Money Issuers nationwide (EMI’s) to coordinate with agents to link their accounts with either the Ghana card or Tax identification Number (TIN) or lose their accounts by February 1, 2024.
A statement issued by the Chamber on Tuesday January 30, 2024 said the decision to block the accounts comes after extensive discussion with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on the need to link all agents accounts with the Ghana card or Tax Identification Number (TIN).
According to the Chamber, all the relevant information regarding the exercise has been communicated directly to the affected agents through various channels leading up to the deadline.
“After multiple extensive engagement with the leadership of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on the linking of all agents accounts with the Ghana card or TIN, the Authority magnanimously gave all EMI’s up to the end of Wednesday, January 31, 2024 to ensure they complete the linking process-Thus all agents without Ghana cards will be blocked on the 1st of February, 2024”.
“We would like to use this press release as the last call to action to the agents by urging them to regularize their operations through the linking of their accounts with their Ghana cards with their TIN, if they haven’t already. Failure to do so before the end of Wednesday, January 31, 2024 will lead to the blocking of their accounts,” it added.
It also said that agents whose accounts are suspended on February 1, 2024 could visit any of the operator outlets with their Ghana card or TIN to complete the process.
It further said that the Chamber remains committed to taking the needed steps to deliver “convenient, secure and accessible financial services to all Ghanaians” given the importance of mobile financial services in facilitating financial inclusion and economic growth.
