The marathon landscape is about to witness a shift as the much-anticipated rebranded Accra City Marathon prepares for a great unveiling in January next year.
It is expected to ignite the essence of road racing with an unparalleled community spirit.
The marathon has garnered the attention of approximately 12,000 dedicated runners from various walks of life, including both professionals and recreational enthusiasts.
Runathon Ghana Foundation, the visionary architects behind this transformative event, has elevated the 42.2-kilometre race to the status of Ghana’s Premier marathon event.
The Accra race is set to not only captivate the nation but also to challenge the likes of iconic marathons such as the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon on a global scale.
Thirty (30) percent of the event’s proceeds will be channeled towards the National Cardiothoracic Centre, an emblematic gesture that reflects their dedication to enhancing healthcare access for those in need.
The event’s visionary, Eric Kwame Adae, the Chairperson of Runathon Ghana Foundation said, “Our journey commenced with Runathon events in 2012. Following a brief pause in 2016 for my overseas education, we are back stronger than ever.
“The Accra City Marathon aims to stride alongside the world’s most illustrious marathons, showcasing the finest facets of Accra and Ghana to a global audience.”
The registration channels are set to open in September, extending a four-month window for potential contenders to prepare for the race.
However, this marathon transcends mere athletic competition. It serves as a beacon to illuminate the vibrant culture, warmth of hospitality, and latent potential that both Accra and Ghana possess.
Runners will battle for supremacy in four categories namely; Men and Women over 18 years, Men and Women Wheelchair Race, 42.2 km Seven-Person Mixed Corporate Relay and five-kilometre Novice Supreme (Boys and Girls).
The main 42.2km runners are expected to reap rewards. First-place winners in both male and female categories will pocket GH¢10,000.
Second and third place runners will secure commendable prizes of GH¢7,000 and GH¢5,000 respectively.
Cash incentives will also extend to participants ranking from fourth to 10th place.
Runners with exceptional efforts, besides the financial components, would be complemented by trophies, medals, and certificates.
