A $4,000 mechanised borehole has been handed over to the Adventist Senior High School in the Kumasi to bring relief to the students
The Rotary Club of Kumasi constructed the mechanised borehole for the school upon a request.
The students have been traveling some kilometers to fetch water due to erratic water supply on campus.
Headmistress of the school, Grace Kafui Ayi, said about 3,000 students on a daily basis cross the main road in front of the school to go and fetch water.
She praised the Rotary Club of Kumasi for the intervention, which she said will relieve students of the strain of searching for water, which tends to disrupt class hours.
She, however, made a passionate appeal to the government and other charitable organizations and individuals to help the school by establishing a suitable toilet facility.
She claimed that the existing restroom facility is nothing to write home about and is seriously inadequate in light of the school’s huge student population.
Mrs. Ayi, on the other hand, emphasized that the school has practically thrived academically despite the challenges that it has faced.
This year, according to her, the school reached the one eighth level of the National Science and Maths Quiz, where it was defeated by the Kumasi Anglican Senior High School.
“We don’t let our difficulties get the best of us,” she noted.
President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi, Nana Effah Mensah, said the newly commissioned mechanised borehole was part of the initiative of the club to drill 15 boreholes and micro flush toilets for some communities and schools in the Ashanti region.
These provisions of water and toilet facilities are done on need basis and upon request, he said, and added after getting the request, the club reached out to its international partners which came on board to support.
He entreated the school authorities to ensure regular maintenance of the borehole in order to ensure constant supply of water to the school.
He said the Rotary Club of Kumasi is the 2nd oldest Rotary Club in Ghana, which is an association of business and professional leaders who strive to promote goodwill, peace, and understanding around the world by performing community service and promoting ethics.
