The Chief of Makro, Baffour Owusu Afriyie, has accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Atwima-Nwabiagya in the Ashanti Region, Michael Amoah Awuku, of allegedly instigating a court action against him.
According to the chief, he has been summoned in court for “putting up un-authorised building thereby obstructing public layout,” and he claimed the action is being taken because he is not seen to be supporting the reappointment bid of the MCE.
In the summons from Nkawie Circuit Court, the chief said he had been ordered to appear in court for “Failing to adhere to stop work notice contrary to Section 91 Act 936 of the Local Government Act 2016.”
Sources say there have been attempts to have the matter resolved amicably but the MCE is said to have insisted the issue should be determined solely by the court.
Some of the chiefs are said to be pushing for the removal of the MCE but his backers are also saying that he brought appreciable development to the area and must be made to continue his good works.
Some residents, particularly members of the NPP recently held demonstrations against what they claimed to be moves to get the MCE reappointed, and said the party could suffer in 2024 if the President’s local representative is not changed.
In the ensuing heat, a Divisional Chief from Nkawie engaged in heated exchanges with the MCE on a local radio station, leading to the traditional ruler warning that the MCE’s purported gross insubordination against the chiefs will not be taken lightly henceforth.
However, the Constituency Organiser, Jude Thaddeus Takyi Opoku, said the MCE should not be hanged because has used his position to promote the development of the municipality, especially in the areas of education, health, power, road construction, and jobs creation.
