A significant number of students who tested positive for Covid-19 have recovered, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Director General of the GHS, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, who made the announcement during a Covid-19 press briefing, said 1709 Covid-19 cases were recorded in 281 schools across the country, but as at March 7 only 381 of the cases were active.
“Looking at the total of over 6000 schools and the number that has recorded cases means that the schools have done well and we hope they continue to maintain the protocols, to keep the number down,” he said.
He however noted that the service recorded a spike in the infection in schools in the Volta Region recently.
“Last week we had a few hikes in the Volta Region but they were a few schools and that was not as risky as when you had a sporadic spread across many schools,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye said.
The GHS Director General indicated that four regions namely Ahafo, Bono, North East and Upper West had no active cases among students.
Also, the North East region is the only region that did not record any Covid-19 case in its schools, he added.
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye emphasized the importance of students and teaching staff to comply with the Covid-19 protocols to ensure they were protected.
He added that the country would receive more Astrezeneca vaccine by May to ensure people were protected from the virus.
So far 202,252 persons have been vaccinated in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central regions.
