Albert Kan-Dapaah
A high-powered security delegation led by the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has paid a working visit to the 11 Mechanised Battalion Area of Operation in Bawku and Mognori Detachments in the Upper East Region.
The visit, according to a statement by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), was necessitated by the emerging threats of terrorism along the northern frontiers of the country and the efforts to deal with the threats.
The delegation included the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Edward Kweku Asomani; Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah; and the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, who is also the head of the Regional Security Council.
They visited Pulmakom Detachment to ascertain at first hand, boundary issues with neighboring countries and the total welfare of troops.
The Ministry had earlier asked Ghanaians to be vigilant and report suspicious activities, cautioning churches and other religious bodies to put in place adequate security measures, including Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.
“In view of the growing threats of terrorism from the sub-region and the expansionist drive of terrorist groups towards coastal West African states, with a renewed modus operandi of targeting public gatherings, including places of worship, it is imperative that precaution measures are taken by all stakeholders,” a statement issued on Friday, May 13 said.
Bawku Visit
Commanding Officer of the 11 Mechanised Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Minta-Agyemang, briefed the Minister and his entourage on the operations, training and logistical matters in the operational area.
Mr. Kan-Dapaah commended the military personnel deployed to the area to ward off any threat to the country.
“The personnel of the Unit have stayed true to their constitutional mandate to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ghana at all times,” the statement quoted the minister as saying.
According to the statement, the National Security Minister told the men in uniform that the government was aware of the challenges they faced and that efforts had been made to deliver the necessary resources for effective and efficient work deliveries.
Mr. Kan-Dapaah also encouraged the personnel to remain professional, hardworking and vigilant, while they work assiduously to protect the north eastern frontiers of the country.
