Alhaji MND Jawula
The former President of Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alhaji MND Jawula, has called for the government to invest GH¢10 million a year to aid in the development of football in the country.
The Lepowura, who serves on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Organisation Committee for Inter-Club Competitions, was speaking in an exclusive interview on ‘Beyond The Pitch’ on GTV Sports+ and said, “I have said it over and over in the media, the easiest way is if the government is convinced that football is interesting and that football when it’s well done, supports the soul of the country, then the government should put a little more into football.
“ It doesn’t need to put too much, if the government is prepared to inject just GH¢10 million into football every year it will make a big change in Ghana.”
The seasoned football administrator, however, warned that “if we push too hard we could destroy football in the country. We don’t have sponsorship like other countries have. In most other countries, it’s about sponsorship that you find a company that will come on board and pay players to the extent that players are comfortable.
“The concept of putting money into football is a philosophy that one might have but I am not sure that most Ghanaian companies are based on that philosophy as yet.”
Alhaji Jawula served as GFA President from 1997 to 2001 and currently serves on CAF’s Organisation Committee for Inter-Club Competitions and Management of the Club Licensing System for a second term.
