Is It Treachery, Greed Or Defiance?

What happened on the dawn of January 7, 2021 was repeated last Friday, March 24, 2023. Those who jubilated the last time are now in tears, while those who wept bitterly the other time are the ones singing the victory song today.

Yes, you heard right. All the ministers and deputy ministers nominated by President Nana Dee have been approved by Parliament with the support of some Zu-za MPs. Despite all the noise, some Zu-za MPs supported the Majority MPs to confirm the president’s nominees.

No wonder the leadership of the opposition Zu-za is up in arms against its own MPs for what it says is an act of treachery. President Ogwanfunu called on the supposed traitors to do some soul-searching and learn to be nationalistic. Whatever he means by that I cannot tell.

As I write, the WhatsApp page of Fifi Kwetey has become Zu-za headquarters annex, where names of those who are believed not to have betrayed the party’s cause are mentioned. In effect, any Zu-za MP whose name is not mentioned on the emotional General Secretary’s WhatsApp page is deemed to have betrayed the party’s cause.

Many theories have been propounded by both the rank and file of the party. While some have focused on the alleged conspiratorial plot by Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka to undermine the Ato Forson leadership, others have accused the so-called traitors of allowing themselves to be bought by the ruling party.

Again, while some MPs are subtly attacking their colleagues and calling their actions out as one of the biggest political sell-outs in decades, others have openly accused Haruna and his ilk of engaging in an act of sabotage to discredit the new Ato Forson leadership. Mr. Isofoton belongs to the former, while Kwaku Ricket Hagan belongs to the latter.

Amidst all the hullabaloo, I can’t help but feel sorry for the gullible Zu-za supporters whose unquestioning loyalty has blinded them of the deception being exhibited by their leaders. How could they believe the claim by their leaders that politics is not about self interest?

As my friend Torgbui Titriku II mentioned in his Facebook post on the matter, self interest always outweighs everything else. The earlier the gullible Zu-za supporters get it, the better for their health as it will save them the ‘wahala’ of having their BP rise to unacceptable levels.

Abusuapanin, I belong to the school of thought that believes the decision by some of the Zu-za MPs to approve the nominees is an act of defiance against the dictatorial traits so far exhibited by General Ntontom and his emotional General Secretary. The letter from the party directing the Minority caucus to reject the ministerial nominees lacked tact. A phone call would have done the trick.

The letter was issued at a time some MPs were still questioning the manner and motive behind the Minority leadership change. The letter further aggravated the anxiety of these MPs as it portrayed them as persons lacking independent thoughts. The resultant effect is for the said MPs to show defiance and prove to the dictators at the party headquarters that MPs are not zombies to be controlled.

As for those Zu-za MPs screaming ‘sabotage’, do not trust their innocence. I saw Mr. Isofoton shedding tears after the results of the secret voting were announced. For all you know, he was just shedding crocodile tears.

If I were a Zu-za member, I would be wary of the Zu-za MPs shedding tears and quickly claiming innocence and accusing others. Often times, the liar, the thief, the backstabber, the snitch and the actual culprit happens to be the one making the most noise, in order deceive others into believing they are innocent.

See you next week for another interesting konkonsa, Deo volente!
