Lightwave eHealthcare Solutions Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, has clarified circumstances leading to the widespread disruption in the digital health record system in hospitals across the country.
In a media release to set the record straight about certain ‘untruths’, the company said the digital health data does not sit outside the country neither has the systems been shut down by its staff.
“Every facility is autonomous, and have their own server with patient data stored locally and only backed up remotely to Ministry of Health (MoH). A centralised data repository sits at the ministries server room. These servers were previously hosted at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) data centre until the ministry built its new offices,” it explained.
The company further highlighted that nobody has shut down the system, clarifying that recently, facility managers have disconnected connectivity to their facilities to prevent Lightwave staff from accessing to provide support.
“These disconnections invariably causes a trigger that would log systems out until connectivity is established, unfortunately because our staff have been reassigned and support is being provided for facilities that remain active,” Mr. Eric Agyei, Project Manager, Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) said.
He further explained that the recent disconnection to integrated services that are outstanding and unpaid has nothing to do with shutdowns being perpetuated.
Also, the company emphasised that Lightwave staff can only assist and support facilities when they are allowed access.
Touching on some technical accuracies equipment delivered during the project, Lightwave said, “the contracts states HP or equivalent in specifications, Lightwave has supplied trusted brands most of which specifications are above what is stated in the contract.”
It admitted that the COVID-19 caused implementation delays, while they faced non availability of conductors to supply computing equipment, challenges post COVID-19.
The company said it had completed several integration, including BDR, NIA, NHIA (ClaimIT, VBCs, CCC etc), Banking, Analyzer Integration, GilMIS as well as trained all Regional IT and HIOs for the government facilities and Bono Region for the Christian Health Association (CHAG), including personnel from the Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, the company shared its project outcomes as of Oct 1, 2025, which includes 99.2% of hospital-level facilities live, 28.6% on-hospital facilities live, 451 total live sites, 25,696,845 registered patients, 56,234,247 total patient visits, 156,090, clinical/support staff trained, 53,589 beds managed, 1,835,022 portable (multi-facility) patient records, 26,428,041 Electronic claims submitted and 42 disease surveillance cases (real-time, including COVID-19).
