MTTD Clears Accra – Kumasi Speed Bumps– FROM Daniel Bampoe, Nustam
THE Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in conjunction with the Maintenance Department of the Ghana Highway Authority is removing all the speed bumps on the Accra-Kumasi highway to replace them with rumble strips.
The speed bumps are causing gridlocks on the Accra-Kumasi Highway especially at Nsutam in the Eastern Region.
There have been numerous speed bumps through Nsutem, Osino, Anyinam, and Nkawkaw junction stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway which is causing vehicular traffic, especially during the weekends.
However, this stressful situation has compelled the Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Frederick Adu-Anim who over the weekend stormed the scenes to assess the cause of recent gridlock on that stretch of the road.
The Director-General of the MTTD blamed the traffic congestion situation on many speed bumps constructed on that stretch of the road, and the increase in the volume of vehicles that ply the road on Fridays to Sundays.
He then ordered Ghana Highway Authority to remove all the speed bumps to replace them with rumble strips.
COP Frederick Adu-Anim addressing the media said his outfit will also deploy personnel onto that stretch of the road to help control the traffic situation and check indiscipline particularly persons who used sirens without lawful authority.
The Manager of Maintenance at the Ghana Highway Authority in the Eastern Region, Engineer Ernest Osei Bonsu said speed bumps on the stretch will be replaced with rumble strips to facilitate the free flow of traffic.
Alternatively, the Ghana Highway Authority and Urban Roads Department are creating emergency congestion reduction routes at Osino and Anyinam on the stretch.
The MTTD boss was accompanied by Eastern Regional Police Commander COP Edward Johnson Oyirifi- Akrofi, Deputy Regional Commander, DCOP Peter Baba Atianak, Regional MTTD Commander, Chief Superintendent Stephen Ahiatafu, and various District and Divisional MTTD Commanders at the jurisdiction.
Currently, almost all the speed bumps have been cleared on that stretch as the works are ongoing for the replacement with the rumble strips.
