Newmont Worker Killed In Accident

DANIEL ASIEDU Akrofi, a worker of Newmont Ahafo Company, a gold mining giant at Kenyasi, on Wednesday met his untimely death when he ran his private saloon car into a broken-down vehicle.

The sad incident occurred at a spot near Sunyani Technical University roundabout on the Sunyani-Kumasi highway in the Bono Region at about 4 a.m.

Mr. Asiedu, 40, was said to be heading towards Kenyasi from Abesim, a suburb of Sunyani Municipality, when the accident happened.

The Bono Regional MTTD station officer, Chief Inspector Joseph Twum, confirmed the death to DAILY GUIDE, saying Mr. Asiedu who originally sustained serious injuries on the head was rushed to the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

He explained that the driver of the broken-down vehicle with registration number AW 7461-14, Abdul Rahman Osuman, 30, had been detained to assist police in their investigation.

He said the front side of the corolla saloon car with registration number GR 258-18 was severely damaged as it ran into the rear side of the truck loaded with plastic pipes.

The Chief Inspector said they were ascertaining why Mr. Asiedu could not locate the stationary truck since preliminary investigation shows that there was a warning triangle for approaching road users.

“Preliminary investigation indicated that the truck broke down at about 12 a.m., while the accident occurred four hours later. The driver of the KIA truck reported himself to the regional police command and was subsequently detained.”
