On Our Marks, Getting Set…..

The chances of elections bereft of logistical challenges and other hiccups as experienced in previous exercises are bright.

Last week the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Security Minister took turns to apprise Parliament about their state of preparedness for next month’s polls.

The appearance of both personalities in Parliament whose roles are critical for the achievements of the foregone was in order.

It is expected that the MPs as representatives of Ghanaians will be good enough to brief their constituents about the assurance given by the EC Chairperson.

The eventual appearance of the EC Chairperson in Parliament after an obvious communication shortcoming which opposition elements sought to make mischief of was a welcome development.

Given the logistical challenges which visited previous polls the assurance of the EC Chairperson that all was set for the polls was heartwarming.

If the successful voter identification exercise is anything to go by then really all is set for December 7.

The signs of a good performance can be spotted in the early hours of the morning, goes an Akan proverb. The unprecedented frequent briefing of Ghanaians about how far the commission had gone with the various processes and still counting is a sign of good things to come in election management in the country.

We recall the ‘pull-them-down’ project of the opposition against the EC and how in spite of the ramped up pressure the commission held its head high, focused and set to deliver with the eventual announcement of the winner of the 2020 polls.

The efficiency with which the Special Voters arrangement has been accomplished is worthy of commendation.

By Monday this week, special voters had seen their details and designated polling stations, something which earned the EC plaudits.

There was an engagement by the EC with representatives of the entities some of whose personnel would be on duty on Election Day to update them about the nature of the special voting in a bid to ensure a smooth exercise.

Regardless of the feats chalked so far by the EC, we would be surprised if the opposition NDC abandons its war of attrition against it. That is the nature of democracy in the hands of those who do not mean the country well, their deeds and utterances exposing them every day.

We urge the EC to keep it up and ensure that really the December 7 polls serve as an icing of the cake for the commission after a long and tortuous journey.

The journey covered the opposition-resisted referendum on the creation of new regions, and the most challenging of them all, the NDC-sabotaged compilation of a new voters’ register.
